"I have been a member for 48 years 5"
I have been a member for 48 years and 5 family members are also members. The service has gone through the floor in the past two years. You can get nothing done these days. I have a hiatus hernia that is giving me trouble. I contacted Benenden who told me that they don't do that particular hernia because its to complicated. Not what my doctor told me. They also suggested that it would be pointless seeing a Benenden consultant if they couldn't do the operation. I am still waiting to see one on the NHS. Two of my sisters have also had negative experiences with the service. Looks like I we are paying almost £70 per month for nothing and are thinking of cancelling. They obviously have a new bright spark boss who think they are improving the service but are actually doing it to save money. A complete rip off.

"Benenden were fantastic when I needed"
Benenden were fantastic when I needed help with a knee problem. NHS just kept saying it was arthritis but I knew it was more than that. Benenden paid for me to see a consultant and then funded a scan which showed I had a meniscal tear. They then funded keyhole surgery to put it right. I can't thank them enough for all their help and assistance in getting me back on my feet and out of pain. Thank you to all the staff.

"Interesting to see the other comments"
Interesting to see the other comments below, as they mirror my experiences. I've been a member for many years, so many that I can't remember when I first enrolled. 20 years? Anyway, in the past, on the one occasion I needed help, they were helpful, and matters were straightforward. This time round things have changed greatly. The physio service they offer through a 3rd party isn't fit for purpose. When I rang, all that could be offered, was the chance to talk to somebody using a phone appointment, and that was going to be 2/3 weeks ahead, and that was just to talk about my problem, never mind doing anything about it. They mention that many issues being able to be resolved purely by exercises at home, without the need to see anybody! Maybe true for some, but surely not the majority of cases. Since when has physiotherapy been a hands off profession? As mentioned below, when eventually speaking to someone on the phone about needing help 2 months ago, she was very combative, and it was as if I were asking her personally to fund a scan! I'm going to ring about that scan requirement again in a moment, and if the response is the same as before, then I'm going to cancel our membership. It's obvious that the outfit is now being run by an ex insurance industry 'Guru', and that things aren't what they used to be, despite the advertising hype. If you believe the maxim that you get what you pay for, then what do you expect for £10 a month? Don't expect miracles!

"Seems to have been a nosedive in their service"
Really not happy with the service I have had over the past two years or with some of the attitudes that I have found. I expected to be treated well and helped with goodwill as I was some years ago for a small one off mole check. Actually most of their agents have been argumentative and unhelpful - it is all a bit 'buyer beware'. I came to them with a simple varicose vein problem but ended up being pushed off to NHS and waiting months and months for consultation and then operation, needing a second opinion and then needing to pursue a different problem that they are now in the process of finding excuses to refuse. Part of the technique seems to be becoming argumentative so I am wondering if agents pay or bonus is tied to how much they do not pay out. Am waiting for a call back from them. As far as I am concerned, the jury is still out, but there seems to have been a nosedive in the service from my experience thus far.

"Mixed feelings about Benenden."
I have been with Benenden Health for 49 years, paying them about £19 a month for me and wife through my Post Office pension fund. I am now 74 years old and in good health. I stayed with them all this time, hoping that perhaps I may need urgent help in the future. Through my experience, I do not trust this establishment at all. In my opinion, it is a biggest con. I feel very angry and bitter about this company but stayed with them so far to help others. They use very flowering language to market their company and send articles on health and diet issues, which we all know about. But when actually seeking for financial help for my cataract operation in the past, they always find lots of excuses not to help. Somehow they find clauses in their Terms and Conditions not to help. Twice, NHS stepped in to help. When I had a heart operation last year, they refused to help me at all in any way. Thank God we have NHS to help us in time of our need. Do not trust this establishment at all.

"Beneden Health has given me my life back twice over the last few years"
Thirteen years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, although the diagnosis was not confirmed until all tests had been completed, these tests mamagram, ct scan and needle biopsy were in situ, I had to wait nearly 3 weeks not the 2 weeks as was then norm. I phoned Benenden Health explained my situation and given the go ahead for private consultation and tests, hence my operation and treatment was within 2 weeks, I could not have had better treatment from Beneden Health and thankful I was a member. 4 years ago I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage 3, once again I contacted Beneden Health and given confirmation to seek private tests, I was once again put into the NHS system for chemotherapy at least 6 weeks earlier than going through normal channels, once again thank you Beneden for giving me these extra years with my family. Although the ovarian cancer has reappeared I am being managed and living with this horrible disease. But I am aware if I felt the need to contact this wonderful health company I would be looked after with professional and friendly support. Thank you for giving me a life back. Elizabeth Tidd

"Poor experience with Benenden"
Really awful experience with this organisation ,wrote to make comment on lack of services provided in my Region, they treated this as a complaint simply to dismiss the points raised and to refuse to enter into further correspondence on any of it. Hopeless situation and would not recommend Benenden to anyone.

Benenden Health
We are Benenden Health We were founded in 1905 with the purpose of people joining together to help pay for medical care for when they might need it. This remains our core purpose today. We still exist for the sole benefit of our members and remain a not-for-profit society. The original mission was to help provide treatment for postal workers suffering from Tuberculosis (TB). Today, our mission is to help regular hard-working people avoid the worry and complications that waiting on the NHS can bring. Our only passion is to improve the quality of our members’ lives, as it always has been. Today we have over 800,000 members, tomorrow we aim for many more. Our vision is to be the UK’s leading healthcare community, making life better for all our members and wider society by taking the strain off the NHS. Why you may not have heard of Benenden Health before? If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard of Benenden Health before when we’ve over 800,000 UK members and have been going for 110 years - it’s because we only opened our doors to the general public since 2012. Prior to this membership was only available to civil servants and Post Office workers. This means you too can now take advantage of Benenden Health. And we’ve recently made some significant improvements so we’re shouting about our simple, smart, affordable healthcare alternative as part of a national advertising campaign so more people are aware of the benefits of membership.Location
